During 2010, the regulation with regard to the declaration of hazardous substances (REACH) will enter into force in the European Union. To meet demand for close contact in the premix industry, Adifo has developed the REACH module in its BESTMIX® formulation software. This REACH module fulfils this regulation in an integrated manner. In consultation with BEMEFA in Belgium and EurAtex in the Netherlands, a standard layout was developed for the import and export of a REACH database containing the required raw materials and their parameters.

What does REACH entail?

  • REACH stands for Regulation for Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals
  • Intended for the premix industry and, by extension, for all companies that produce and transport premixes which contain “hazardous substances” that come under the scope of the REACH
  • All raw materials (simple and compound) will receive a specific classification
  • Based on the raw materials used, the final product will receive a specific classification.
  • This classification results in a specific statement on the label
    - R phrases
    - S phrases
  • Environmental symbol - safety symbol - health symbol
  • By extension, it also creates an MSDS for the final product
  • By extension, it also creates the ADR documents for transport

What does the BESTMIX® REACH module entail?

  • Possibility to input the MSDS data on the raw materials into BESTMIX®. This concerns the safety classification, the applicable R and S phrases, minimum percentages for application of hazard symbols and more of the same
  • Provisions to import and/or export the standard REACH database
  • Data is saved and printed in multiple languages
  • REACH data are immediately visible during optimisation
  • All necessary data can be printed on the label or made available to a label database from which the labels separate from BESTMIX® can be printed
  • This makes it unnecessary to build and maintain a database separate from BESTMIX® in order to make these REACH declarations 

What is still in the pipeline?

  • Integrated possibility to print MSDS sheets
  • Integrated possibility to print ADR documents 

What are the advantages of the BESTMIX® REACH module?

  • The raw materials database is managed at one place. There is no need to build a second database for REACH.
  • REACH data are immediately visible during optimisation, which means that adjustments can be made immediately. Therefore, no time is lost in comparison to external software where a REACH declaration can only be created after optimisation and completion
  • Upon completion, a completely graphical REACH declaration can be viewed as a last checkpoint before the product is sent to production
  • The possibility to read in a standardised database (e.g. BEMEFA) or to distribute the built database to subsidiaries.
  • The label module has been expanded to include the possibility of integrating the generated REACH information in the existing labels as well
